IBM Middleware Support for Critical Banking Systems

Challenge

Privredna banka Zagreb operates a complex IBM middleware landscape that supports a large number of critical banking applications and integration services. The environment includes IBM WebSphere Application Server, IBM WebSphere Liberty, IBM MQ, and IBM Business Process Manager (IBM BPM) / IBM Business Automation Workflow (BAW) platforms, running across production and non-production environments with high expectations for availability, stability and operational continuity.

The main challenge was to provide reliable long-term support for a mission-critical middleware platform, while also being able to resolve complex issues that often span multiple layers — infrastructure, JVMs, databases, application code, transaction management and integration flows.

In such an environment, incident resolution requires more than standard system administration. It requires deep understanding of how enterprise Java applications behave on IBM middleware platforms and how configuration, performance, thread usage, connection pools and application design influence overall system stability.

Project Goals
  • 01

    Ensure Platform Availability

Provide continuous support for IBM middleware platforms used by critical banking applications and business processes.
  • 02

    Resolve Critical Incidents Faster

Support the bank in resolving production incidents through fast response, structured analysis and clear technical recommendations.
  • 03

    Improve Operational Stability

Identify risks and optimization opportunities through proactive reviews of system configuration, logs, platform behaviour and environment setup.
  • 04

    Connect System and Application Expertise

Analyze problems across the full stack — from WebSphere clusters and JVM diagnostics to application code, JDBC connection pools, thread dumps and transaction behaviour.

Solution

Kodilion provides ongoing system support services for PBZ’s IBM middleware environment, covering IBM WebSphere Application Server, IBM WebSphere Liberty, IBM MQ, and IBM BPM / BAW platforms. The support service includes incident response, operational assistance, proactive system reviews, platform consulting and guidance for new implementations, upgrades and integrations.

The PBZ environment includes a large number of J2EE / Spring applications and a large-scale WebSphere ND environment consisting of dozens of clustered middleware instances, across production and non-production environments. Kodilion’s role is to help maintain the stability of this platform and support the bank’s teams in keeping critical applications available and reliable.

The service also includes proactive and reactive support for WebSphere, MQ, and IBM BPM platforms. Proactive activities focus on identifying and preventing issues before they affect production, while reactive support covers critical situations with defined response expectations and continuous troubleshooting until the issue is resolved.

Kodilion’s key strength in this engagement is the ability to combine infrastructure knowledge with application-level analysis. When production issues occur, our team investigates not only the middleware configuration, but also JVM behaviour, WebContainer threads, heap and core dumps, JDBC connection pools, transaction handling and application implementation patterns.

During several production incident investigations, Kodilion identified bottlenecks related to thread contention, database connection management and application-level synchronization mechanisms, providing remediation plans that improved platform stability and application responsiveness.

As a result of our cooperation, PBZ benefits from faster incident resolution, improved platform stability, reduced operational risk and access to specialized IBM middleware expertise that supports the continuous operation of critical banking services. This approach helps PBZ stabilize production services faster, understand the real root cause of complex incidents and reduce the risk of recurring issues.
